Mixing Synthetic Formation Aid

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of powdered formation aid into 1⁄2 gallon (2 l) of water and refrigerate, overnight. You can also sprinkle the powder into a blender filled with water, blend the mixture, and then dilute it as necessary. The formation aid is then added to the vat and mixed thoroughly with the pulp.

Step-by-Step Japanese Sheet Formation

Many papermakers have adapted techniques from the Japanese tradition because they work well with many plant fibers. These instructions are for making a sheet of paper using a sugeta or an adapted Western mould (see here), prepared formation aid, and the Japanese sheet-forming technique called nagashi-zuki. For complete information on traditional and modern Japanese papermaking, refer to Japanese Papermaking by Timothy Barrett.
